Domain Registration, Renewal and Transfer Prices Explained

Three prices describe three different transactions

A registrar may show registration, renewal and transfer prices for the same extension. These numbers are not interchangeable. Registration creates a new domain record, renewal extends a domain already in your account, and transfer moves an existing domain between registrars.

A price comparison should preserve those labels. Treating a transfer promotion as a new-registration deal, for example, gives a misleading answer to someone trying to buy an unregistered name.

Registration price

The registration price normally covers the initial term for an available standard domain. Many registrars use introductory pricing, so the first year can be lower than later years. A premium name may have a different acquisition price determined by the registry or registrar and should not be represented by the standard TLD price list.

When you search a complete domain, availability must be confirmed. A public .com price alone cannot tell you whether a particular .com name is available or premium.

Renewal price

Renewal is the cost of keeping the domain after its current registration term. It is commonly the most important number for a long-lived project because it repeats each year. Renewal prices can change over time, so a comparison is a current estimate rather than a lifetime commitment from the registrar.

Automatic renewal reduces the risk of accidental expiry, but it does not remove the need to review the renewal amount and payment method before the due date.

Transfer price

A transfer price applies when moving an eligible domain from one registrar to another. For many extensions, a successful transfer adds a year to the registration term, but exact registry rules and eligibility restrictions vary. Recently registered, recently transferred or locked domains may not be immediately transferable.

Keep transfer cost outside a standard three-year new-registration calculation unless your plan specifically includes changing registrars. If you do plan to transfer, also consider transfer-out usability, account security and support—not only the incoming promotional price.
